We live in a digital age where smart home technology can do amazing things. The Nest Thermostat is one of the newest products on the market, which allows individuals and families to take control of their home’s heating and cooling—remotely.

Changing the Owner of Your Nest

The Nest Thermostat can learn your heating and cooling habits by paying attention to and recording the settings you frequently use. After just a week of learning you and your family’s habits, the Thermostat can create an automated schedule for your heat and cooling. The goal is to help you save energy for your home—and the environment!
The Eco Temperature mode switches on when it senses that you’re away from the home. This automates the best temperatures to heat or cool your home in order to save energy. You can also access Eco mode when you’re home.
You can tell that this mode is on when you see the green leaf on the screen. The green leaf on the thermostat screen appears to help you and your family members learn how to save energy. You can track those energy savings inside the Nest app.
Unlike some other Nest devices, the Nest Learning Thermostat can work without having to add an owner account. You can simply use the thermostat dial on your wall to control your heat and air conditioning. However, you will need an account to control certain features, including:

If you move homes or decide to give your Nest Thermostat to another person, you may decide to name a new owner on the device. To change the owner of your Nest Thermostat, you must first remove your account from the device. When you do this, you will lose some capabilities and permissions to control it.
Here’s how to remove your account from the device:
- In the Nest app, select the Home you’d like to edit. (This step applies to those who have more than one home on their Nest account.) In Settings, tap the product you’d like to remove.Scroll down to select Remove Nest Thermostat.Confirm your choice.
If you do not plan on using your Nest Thermostat again, you’ll have to perform a factory reset. This will clear out all the settings you have created in order to allow a new user to start over with the product setup. This is useful if you’re moving out of your home or need to install your thermostat in a new location.
Before you reset your Nest Thermostat, however, be sure to write down your settings so you can access them in the future if you need to. On your thermostat, go to Settings > Equipment to record your system wires, heating type, and Safety Temperature settings.
To
perform a factory reset on your Thermostat follow these steps:
- Press the thermostat ring to access the Quick View menu.Choose Settings.Turn the ring to Reset and press to select.Choose All Settings, which will reset all of your personal settings and reset the device to default settings.

The Nest Thermostat allows you to access basic settings like temperature control on the device itself. However, if you want to access remote controls from your smartphone, you’ll need to create an account and add any other users in the home you’d like to also have that access.

Migrating Your Nest Account to
When you’re deciding to change your Nest Thermostat’s owner, it’s important to consider an update Google has recently implemented to user accounts. Google has recommended that all users of Nest Home products migrate their accounts to Google. Since this new update, regular users now have the same broad rights and permissions as the owner of the device.
If you do not have a Google account, it’s recommended that you create one. If you already have a Google account, you can use it to set up any Nest products you have. You may already have a Google account if you’ve used any other Google products (like YouTube) on the internet.
When you switch your Nest account to a Google account, you’ll only have to log in to one unified account to manage your devices and their security. Google’s goal in this is to create a more seamless Smart Home experience, with the capability to integrate multiple Nest and Google Assistant products. For instance, your Google Home can connect with your Nest Thermostat so you can give the command, “Hey Google, turn the air conditioning on to 75 degrees.”
After you migrate to a Google account, all members of your household will have the same permissions and control as the original owner. They can add or remove devices, change device settings, link to other services, and add or remove users. So, when adding users to your Home, it’s important to make sure they are trusted family and/ or friends.
What Happens after Removing Your
Account
Because your Thermostat can function without an account, you still have access to many capabilities after you remove your account from your Nest Thermostat device.

- or manual scheduleRemember your Wi-Fi informationOther basic functions
Because your Nest Thermostat stays connected to your WiFi, it will continue to communicate with Google’s servers. This means it can still receive software updates. It will also still send data and its originating IP address to Google. Make sure to disconnect your Thermostat from your WiFi if you do not want data logging and software updates to continue.
