Things to remember before backing up iPhone to Mac
NOTE 1: This method does not require iTunes or any other third-party software.
NOTE 2: If you back up your iPhone to your Mac with the help of Finder, then you have to use Finder to restore the backup to your iPhone.
NOTE 3: Make sure your Mac has enough free disk space to back up your iPhone to avoid errors during the backup process. The amount of free space required depends on your iPhone’s data (photos and apps).
NOTE 4: During the backup process, you can use your iPhone.
NOTE 5: Make sure your Mac has at least 50% battery or is connected to a power outlet before starting the backup.
Using Finder to backup iPhone to Mac
Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your Mac using the cable provided with your iPhone.
Step 2: Unlock your iPhone and check if it is showing Trust this computer Prompt. If yes, tap Trust. If asked to enter the passcode, please do so.
Step 3: Next, open Finder or any folder. In the left pane, under the Locations section, your iPhone should appear. Click on your iPhone’s entry.
If the iPhone does not show up, wait a minute or two before reconnecting.
Step 4: Clicking on the iPhone’s entry will show information about the iPhone, including storage, battery level, and iOS version number.
Here, click on the Back Up Now button to back up your iPhone to Mac. The Back Up Now button can be found in the Backups section.
Step 5: Once you click the Back Up Now button, you might see the “Trust this computer” message on your iPhone. You might need to unlock the iPhone by entering the passcode.
Step 6: Mac will start backing up all data from iPhone to Mac. Depending on the size of the data, the process might take a few minutes to close to an hour.
The Finder window shows the progress at the bottom. Do not disconnect or close Finder during the backup process.
Step 7: Once the backup is completed, you will see “Last backup to this Mac: Today, xx.xx AM/PM” in the Backups section. This confirms that your iPhone has been successfully backed up to Mac. You may now disconnect your iPhone from your Mac.
