We can now say that virtual reality on Xbox is dead and buried. And that’s not because of some rumors, it’s what Microsoft recently confirmed. Although it has promised VR support for years, Microsoft admitted that they can’t bring it to the Xbox One.
Last week, at the E3 video game convention in Los Angeles, Microsoft Chief Marketing Officer Mike Nichols told GamesIndustry.biz the following: “We don’t have any plans specific to Xbox consoles in virtual reality or mixed reality.”
Then, he continues explaining that their “perspective on it has been and continues to be that the PC is probably the best platform for more immersive VR and MR.”
However, the confession doesn’t seem to match with the promise in June 2016, when Xbox chief Phil Spencer spoke about Project Scorpio: “This is hardware built specifically to lead the console industry into true 4K gaming and high-fidelity VR.”
Then, in 2017, Phil Spencer confirmed that they’re committed to VR, and that the Xbox One X fully supports VR technology.
The Main Focus is Windows Mixed Reality
Now in 2018, a Microsoft spokesperson stated that Mixed Reality is not going to make an appearance on consoles, explaining that the main focus is to bring it to PC:
In an interview with GameSpot, Spencer added that the requests for MR console games hasn’t been high, but the Xbox One X hasn’t yet closed its door on MR games. We could say the same about console sales, not just requests for MR console games. Compared to the PS4 consoles, the Xbox One had much lower sales (less than half the number of PS4 consoles), not to mention that Sony has also shipped over 2 million PlayStation VR headsets.
Because of the opportunity with Windows Mixed Reality, and because we believe the user experience will be best on PC right now, that is where our focus is. We have nothing to share about MR for console at this time.
Whoever bought a $500 Xbox One X hoping it will feature MR games, will not be happy about Microsoft’s decision.
